GA welcomes Working Dog Alliance report into improving greyhound welfare

Greyhounds Australasia CEO Scott Parker today welcomed the Working Dog Alliance Australia report into best practice rearing, socialisation, education and training methods for racing greyhounds released by GRNSW last week.

“This is a landmark report that will inform the development of the industry’s ongoing reform agenda,” Mr Parker said.

Mr Parker acknowledged the report’s finding that there was no evidence that it was necessary to use animal-derived products in lures to teach greyhounds to chase.

“I strongly support the report’s recommendations, many of which the industry has already begun to implement.

“The report will immediately benefit the current development of a nationally accredited participant education program designed to ensure all participants understand their role in ensuring we meet the community’s expectations about how our greyhounds are cared for - before, during and after their racing careers.

“I strongly support the need for significant cultural change to align industry performance with community expectations and for all greyhound welfare and integrity outcomes to be reported on publicly.

Mr Parker applauded GRNSW’s work to date to change its industry.

“GRNSW has made significant progress over the past five months in reforming its industry including the redistribution of prize money to establish a $1.1M Welfare and Integrity Fund. The Fund supports a number of measures to improve greyhound welfare and industry integrity outcomes including additional compliance and education resources and increased investment in greyhound re-homing initiatives.

“The sweeping reforms also include the introduction of an intelligence led, risk based approach to industry supervision, enhanced drug detection initiatives, and the commitment to introduce licencing of all participants not just owners and trainers.

“GRNSW has used an evidenced based approach to policy development that recognises improved welfare outcomes will drive increased performance and support industry sustainability. The prospect of further reform, with the findings of this report to guide decisions and in consultation with other controlling bodies, should be welcomed by all industry stakeholders.

“GA and its member controlling bodies will continue to progress a transparent reform agenda that rebuilds public trust while supporting a sustainable industry that takes account of all the moral, legal and financial requirements of it.

“As industry leaders, it is our responsibility to regain the community trust by demonstrating that we can meet expectations, and we accept that challenge,” Mr Parker said.
