Chairman Review

The 2019/2020 season was challenging for the whole racing industry. One element of comfort in
addressing the many issues we faced was that we were not on our own and during this time we
worked closely with all our greyhound racing jurisdictions sharing ideas and information to ensure
racing continued with the least disruption. We were fortunate as an industry that only two
jurisdictions saw a cessation of racing, being New Zealand and Tasmania. This significantly reduced
the potential impact on our stakeholders and ensured the economic decline was more controlled.
While travel restrictions continue in effect between States and to NZ, there will be ongoing impacts.
There were some extra challenging periods as various governments worked through the mountain of
issues that needed to be considered in determining whether racing could be a permitted activity.
This necessitated numerous changes to race day operations and track access to ensure the safety of
participants and officials. It was pleasing to see the positive commitment of all participants and
clubs as these changes were implemented. Our ability to move swiftly and implement appropriate
protocols is testament to the calibre of the teams in every jurisdiction. We thank our respective
Ministers, regulators, integrity providers, and government agencies for their support and
prioritisation in the decisions to keep racing going.

A clear focus on the common good has developed during the Covid-19 crisis which brought the
three racing codes closer together in a proactive and pragmatic way.  This shared focus and
collaboration ensured both continued racing and an early return to racing for Tasmania and New
Zealand with the support of clubs and participants.  We hope that we will not see further disruption
to racing but are confident that in the event there is, we are in a strong position to react and
respond as needed.

Welfare remained a key focus for us during the year and every jurisdiction performed well
particularly with rehoming. There is a full focus on multiple programs to maximise rehoming
opportunities and ongoing investment in facilities and teams to manage the full lifecycle of our
racing dogs. The public response during lockdown periods has been overwhelming with many
rehoming kennels being emptied of all available dogs. When you are at home all the time no one
can doubt the companionship and comfort a beautiful, retired greyhound can give.
Public support and confidence in our operations continues to be of major importance to ensure that
our sport can continue. The care that our participants have for their dogs and the lengths they go to
ensure our dogs have a good life is impressive. We need to continue to keep up the good work and
have welfare as a primary consideration in every aspect of breeding, training, racing and retirement.
At the operational level we have managed GA services remotely as needed and the team have done
a wonderful job to maintain service to participants. There were some delays with DNA testing but
overall, not a lot of disruption.

We are part way through our implementation of the GA Strategic Plan and took the decision to delay
some of the initiatives for obvious reasons. We are confident to pick these up in the coming year
and remain committed to the various outcomes previously agreed. This will necessitate some
reprioritisation of activities recognising the changed world we now have.
A special thank you to all participants, GA staff, and the teams in each jurisdiction for your
contribution, co-operation and advice during these challenging times. We wish you every success for
the season ahead.
